You know that moment when you pull a load of white towels out of the dryer and they’ve somehow turned a shade of orange that doesn’t quite match the decor? I blamed the detergent, then the old pipes, then the washing machine. But nope—it was the well water.

What’s Really in Your Water?
Before you can fix anything, you need to know what you’re dealing with. Iron in well water isn’t just one thing—it comes in a few flavors, and each needs a different tactic.
First, there’s dissolved ferrous iron (sometimes called clear-water iron). You pour a glass, it looks fine, but let it sit a while and it turns rusty. That’s the iron oxidizing after it hits air. It injects a tiny amount of chlorine into the water, runs it through a contact tank to kill bacteria and oxidize metals, then strips the chlorine back out with a carbon filter. Some setups add UV disinfection well water as a final polish. Done right, your water doesn’t taste like a swimming pool—it just tastes clean.
Any of these can be paired with a sediment prefilter to catch sand or grit before it reaches the media, which means less maintenance down the road.
But I Already Have a Softener…
I hear this all the time. A water softener is great for hardness, but it’s not built to remove iron from well water in any serious amount. If you try to use a softener as your main iron buster, the resin beads foul up, you’ll use way more salt, and your water will still taste metallic. Trust me, I’ve seen the inside of a softener that was fed straight well water with 4 ppm iron—it looked like a rusty sponge. So think of it this way: the iron filter handles the metals and smells; the softener handles the hardness. They work together. Sizing, Installation, and Keeping It Running
You can’t just slap any old filter on your pipe and call it a day. The size of the system matters—a lot. You need to match the media volume and backwash rate to your home’s flow rate GPM sizing and your well pump’s output. Won’t This Kill My Water Pressure?
