Well Water Testing in Indiana: What Contaminants to Check and When

Last spring, a friend out near Morse Reservoir called me in a bit of a panic. Her well water had always been fine — clear, no weird smell — but suddenly the bathtub was turning orange and the water had a faint rotten-egg whiff. She figured a water softener was the fix. Turns out, it was iron bacteria and a failing well cap. A quick test and a few repairs got things back to normal. But it got me thinking: most folks on a private well don’t test until something smells or stains. By then, the problem’s been brewing for a while. And here in central Indiana, there are some things you just can’t see — or smell — that deserve a closer look.

Clear Water Doesn’t Mean Safe Water

If your water runs clear and you’ve lived in the same house for ten years without a problem, it’s easy to think everything’s fine. But private wells in Indiana aren’t regulated like city water — nobody’s checking them but you. And a lot of the stuff that can make you sick has no taste, no color, no smell.

Bacteria like total coliform and E. coli can sneak in through a cracked well cap, an old pit, or surface runoff after a heavy rain. Nitrates come from fertilizer, manure, or a septic system that needs attention — and high levels are especially bad for babies and pregnant women. Arsenic shows up naturally in some central Indiana groundwater, and if you’re near certain industrial sites or old landfills, PFAS (those “forever chemicals”) might be a concern. Then there’s lead — not from the well itself usually, but from old indoor plumbing. None of these are things you can eyeball.

Hard water’s another story — you’ll see the spots on your glasses and feel the soap scum. Iron and manganese leave orange or brown stains. That rotten-egg smell? Hydrogen sulfide gas, often linked to a harmless but annoying sulfur bacteria. A softener might mask the hardness, but it won’t touch bacteria or chemicals. (That’s where good water treatment equipment comes in, but only after you know what’s in the water.)

So, When Should You Test?

There’s a rhythm to well water testing in Indiana, and it’s not a “once and done” thing. The bare minimum: test for bacteria and nitrates every year. They’re the most common troublemakers and can change with the seasons — spring rains and snowmelt flush stuff into the ground. Run a full chemistry and metals panel every three to five years to catch things like arsenic, lead, and hardness.

Some situations push testing to the top of the list, right now:

  • After a new well is drilled. If you just had a well installed — maybe on a big lot outside Noblesville or in a new build in Westfield — that water needs a full checkup before you drink it. (WaterPros handles well drilling, so we can test start to finish.)

  • If your yard floods or water pools near the wellhead. Noblesville sits in the White River watershed, and a few heavy storms can send water rushing toward low spots.   • When you’re pregnant or have a new baby. Nitrates are a big deal for bottle-fed infants, causing “blue baby syndrome.” Test early.
  • When buying or selling a house. Most home sales with a private well require a recent water test, and sometimes a well and septic inspection too.

A good rule of thumb: if something changes — taste, smell, color, or if anyone in the house has unexplained stomach issues — test sooner than later.

What Contaminants to Check (And What the Lab Report Means)

Not all tests are the same, and you don’t always need the most expensive panel. Here’s a cheat sheet.

Basic potability panel ($50–150): This covers total coliform/E. coli and nitrates. It’s your annual baseline. Make sure the lab is state-certified — Hamilton County has several, and we can point you to the right one.

Expanded metals/minerals panel ($150–300): Adds arsenic, lead, iron, manganese, hardness, pH, total dissolved solids, and sometimes more. Good to run every few years or if you notice staining.

PFAS or VOC testing ($250–400): Not routine, but if you’re near an industrial zone, airport, or fire training facility, or just want peace of mind, it’s worth it. PFAS don’t break down easily, so an ounce of prevention here is a pound of filtration later.

DIY test strips are tempting, but they’re not accurate enough for health decisions. You need a lab that follows chain-of-custody and uses proper methods. Sampling is a little finicky: sterile bottles, a cold indoor tap (not a hose or swivel faucet), let the water run a bit, and get the sample on ice to the lab within the time window. When you get the report, compare your numbers to the EPA’s maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) or health advisories. Even though private wells don’t legally have to meet them, they’re the best guide for what’s safe.

Making Sense of the Numbers and What to Do Next

Once you’ve got the lab report in hand, don’t let the numbers overwhelm you. Here’s how we look at it:

  • Bacteria positive? Often fixed with shock chlorination — a one-time bleach treatment. For ongoing protection, a UV disinfection system is solid. It kills bacteria as water passes through without adding chemicals.
  • High nitrates or arsenic? Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is a proven fix. For whole-house levels that are way over, a more complex system might be needed.
  • Iron, manganese, or rotten-egg smell? An iron filter or aeration system handles that. Hardness gets a softener. But note: a softener alone doesn’t remove those metals in high concentrations — you need a dedicated filter.
  • PFAS or VOCs? Granular activated carbon or reverse osmosis are the go-to options. A whole-house filtration system can tackle multiple issues at once.
